Flutter News Update | February 2024

It’s time to launch a new series!

For some time, we’ve been observing the growing interest in Flutter app development is related to the need to be up-to-date with Flutter novelties. That’s why we’re starting a series of posts with a summary of the latest Flutter-related news that we find important. We hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we do.

Recently, the Flutter team announced the release of AI support for Dart SDK. What does it mean for mobile app development? What other changes does version 3.19 introduce?

AI integration

A beta version of Google’s AI Dart SDK was released. It allows us to implement generic AI models in the apps. At the same time, Google promotes its recently released Gemini model.

Along with the google_generative_ai library, a new segment appeared in the documentation on the Google website. It includes a comprehensive introduction to these tools in the Dart language.

Inspirations and new opportunities

You know where to look for info about the implementation of this model now. But where can you use this solution in the first place?

  • News apps and blogs – you can add an option that transfers a long text into a short list of the key takeaways with just one tap on the button.
  • Image interpretation – tools provided by Google allow us to formulate queries with images. It would be a shame not to use this function, for example, by generating text from images for people with visual impairment.
  • Chatbots – this example is probably the most representative one. We can easily add a chatbot to our mobile apps and improve the user experience.

The new version of Flutter is available

The release of tools supporting AI overshadowed the news about the new Flutter version. It’s still worth your attention, though.

  • In the 3.19 version, we see changes in the Impeller, a graphical engine. They should improve and accelerate performance. This way, Impeller is getting even closer to becoming the default Android renderer somewhere this year.
  • A tool for checking deep link validity was introduced. It will facilitate delivering this feature for software developers.
  • Last but not least, we’d like to mention early support for the Arm64 architecture in the Windows system. As you can see, Flutter’s growth continues beyond mobile solutions!
