Wrocław City Game for Children - Project Goals
The City of Wrocław wanted to build an app that would encourage children and tourists to explore the capital of Lower Silesia, allowing them to discover various corners of the Old Town in an attractive way.
While playing the WroDwarf app, users build a team and walk around Wrocław. Their task is to find dwarf figures, scan them, and answer riddles. This way, they earn energy blocks and can achieve the mission’s goal – to free the dwarfs from the pixel dimension.
Project assumptions
- The mission requires moving around Wrocław, which is why the app was designed and built primarily with smartphones in mind.
- The client wanted to have the option to create a dedicated mobile app for iOS and Android in the future. For this reason, Holdapp proposed building a web app using Flutter, which can later be quickly adapted for smartphones.
- The project timeline was tight, and the client wanted an attractive presentation of the dwarfs – the main characters of the game. This also weighed heavily in favor of choosing Flutter.

About the client
The City Promotion and Tourism Department (Wrocław City Hall) is responsible for shaping Wrocław’s image as an attractive tourist destination with plenty to offer. The department’s duties include city promotion, tourism development, event organization, and running research projects within CityLab Wrocław. More information can be found at visitwroclaw.eu.

Process
UX/UI Design
We wanted the graphics to be appealing to children, so we closely examined popular games to serve as our inspiration. However, our designs were primarily modeled after the actual dwarf figurines scattered throughout Wrocław’s Old Town.
This led to the creation of diverse dwarf characters, each with their own unique personality and distinctive features.
On top of that, we focused on animations that make the game even more engaging. All of this encourages the youngest users to play and explore Wrocław.
Flutter app development
We had very little time to build the app, so we decided to develop the product using Flutter technology. It is a cross-platform technology. Thanks to it, we were able to quickly build a web app. In the future, we will be able to deploy it on Android and iOS without significant changes.
Additionally, Flutter makes it easy to create animations, which is a key element in games, especially when they are designed with children in mind. At the same time, it does not slow down the performance of the app, which has a positive impact on the UX and allows users to fully enjoy the game.
QA tests
Before the app was launched to users, we tested its performance in the field. In this way, we ensured that all features work according to the requirements and will be well-received by the users.
